The BWE Textile Environmental Calculator helps textile, apparel and footwear companies deliver environmental performance to their customers through better decisions about the materials in their products. The BWE TEC provides a gauge of environmental impact performance for a wide range of fibers and textiles across the product life cycle from the origins of raw materials through finished textiles. It incorporates industry-recognized indicators including energy, water, and land use, human and ecological toxicity, and greenhouse gas emissions. Users can choose how much weight will be given to each impact category or use default weighting contained within the system. They also have a choice of using their own supply chain data, generic data or a combination. Outputs are provided via easily understood graphic visualizations of the results. The BWE TEC can also be used to gauge the environmental performance of textiles that use fiber blends, based on the percentages of fibers.
The BWE TEC will be especially helpful to product development and design teams, fabric sourcing and sustainability staff, and suppliers. It can be used to evaluate textiles already in use in existing apparel and footwear lines, compare alternative materials to current materials, and to track overall changes in environmental performance across product lines.
The system incorporates data from life cycle inventory databases, published and unpublished life cycle assessment studies, material safety data sheets (MSDS's), and government databases on chemical hazards.
